Reversing your yacht - some tips
Reversing a yacht, especially if it’s a large one, can be quite a task. Here are some general steps to help guide you through the process:
Check Surroundings: Before starting, have a clear view of your surroundings. Look for obstacles, other boats, and the layout of the dock or marina.
Engage the Engine: Start the engine and ensure it’s running smoothly. Check that the transmission is in reverse gear.
Use the Propeller: When reversing, the propeller will push the yacht backwards. Keep in mind that the direction of the propeller’s thrust can affect the yacht’s movement and handling. (Read more about “propeller walk”).
Steering: Turn the wheel or joystick in the direction you want the stern (back) of the yacht to go. For example, turn the wheel to the left if you wish the stern to move to the left. Remember, the steering effect will be opposite to how it feels when moving forward.
Go Slowly: Reverse at a slow and controlled speed. Sudden movements can cause you to lose control or bump into obstacles.
Communicate: If you have a crew or someone assisting you, communicate clearly. They can help guide you and watch for any potential issues.
Use Thrust Control: Many modern yachts have bow and stern thrusters to help manoeuvre the boat more easily in tight spaces. Use these if available.
Practice: Reversing a yacht can be tricky and takes practice. If you’re new to it, try practising in a safe, open area before attempting to dock in a busy marina.
Stay Calm: Keep your cool and make adjustments as needed. Panicking can lead to mistakes.
With practice and patience, reversing a yacht will become more intuitive. Safe boating!
