How to obtain your SLC in 6 easy steps

Your “must have” sailing license for chartering boats in the Mediterranean…

What is the SLC?

The Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) is a globally accepted license for bareboat yacht chartering, including in the Mediterranean. You’ll need the SLC-P (Powerboat version) if you plan to charter a powerboat.

Be cautious—not all licenses are recognised! Some organisations hand out licenses without ensuring proper experience. That’s why NauticEd requires a combination of education, skills assessment, and real boating experience before awarding the SLC.

  • Easy to do, fill out the form below.

  • Get a free online logbook (you need this later)…

  • There is also a free self-examination to see if your current knowledge is close to what is required.

✅ Step 2: Obtain a local boat license

  • In Western Australia, this is the “Skipper’s Ticket” and is a minimum requirement to skipper a small motor boat with a motor exceeding 6 HP.

  • In Queensland, this is the “Recreational Boat License,” and most states (even the ACT) have similar licensing requirements.

✅ Step 3: Log Your Boating Experience

  • Log at least 50 days of boating experience (a “day” = at least 4 hours).

  • At least 25 days must be spent as captain of the vessel.

  • At least 25 days must be on a boat larger than 28 feet (8.6m).

  • Be honest—false logs can have legal consequences in case of an accident!

✅ Step 4: Do the theory courses

✅ Optional: Get a Catamaran Endorsement

  • Complete an online Catamaran course and log experience on a 38 ft+ catamaran.

  • To upgrade, take an on-the-water catamaran assessment with a qualified SLC assessor.

✅ Step 5: Pass the On-the-Water Assessment

  • A one-day practical assessment with an approved SLC assessor (6 hours for sail, 4 hours for power).

  • Covers essential skills like docking, Mediterranean mooring, and handling emergencies.

  • Includes a 45-minute written test on navigation, tides, and maritime rules.

  • Mandurah Sailing Academy charges $295 for the assessment.

✅ Step 6: Pay the SLC Issuance Fee

The SLC license fee is just US$95.
